Lamurians quench their thirst

Women in Lamuria Tigithi ward were all smiles on Wednesday 15th this month when they received over 250 water tanks from the county government of Laikipia led by His Excellency Governor Joshua Irungu and area member of county assembly Honorable Beth Waithera. With him were county executive committee members (CECS), their chief officers and other county officials.

The governor gave out the tanks, as he was aware of the need to harvest water because the area is dry and water is scarce. The governor had noted that when it rained most of the water was going to waste due to inadequate and poor storage facilities the residents in the area had. Giving out the tanks to women who had formed development groups in the area was fulfilling the promise he had pledged.
He stated that his vision was to see each household in the area having a tank. This was because he was aware that rivers in the area were very far from the residents and this affected even the learning program as children came from school only to go and fetch water taking a lot of time that could have been used to study

The governor also urged the women to make use of the money made available by the county government for the women to invest rather than acquiring loans from financial institutions which have high interest rates for their loans.

The women grateful, had a gift for the governor and his officials –a cake baked specifically for him to show their gratitude. In return, the governor gave them 30,000 shillings to cater for their drinks.

About 16,000 people received treatment from the British Army Training Unit (BATUK) in partnership with the County Government of Laikipia at Sharom IDP camp.
The two-day medical camp in Ngobit Ward brought together doctors from the Kenya Army and Laikipia, in addition to the BATUK. The Kenya Red Cross and Tunza PS Kenya also took part.

“My government has undertaken several partnership projects with the BATUK, including rehabilitation of the Nanyuki Stadium and erection of an electric fence in Laikipia East Sub – County, to mitigate human-wildlife conflict,” H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu said.

He added that through his intervention, the BATUK has set aside $15,000 (about Sh1.5 million) for erection of another fence very soon.

The partnership has conducted five camps - Mbogo-ini in Olmoran Ward, Theria in Marmanet, Maili Saba in Igwamiti and two camps in the IDP Settlement – in one year.
On the other hand, the county government has completed the construction of a dispensary at the IDP camp. The facility is due for opening in June or July.

The dispensary will be well equipped and sufficient drugs supplied prior to launching. The Governor is committed to ensure the dispensary becomes a health centre in the near future, in order to improve the health standards in the county.

The British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner joined the Governor in presiding over the official closing of the medical camp. Dr Turner urged residents of Ngobit to conduct the by-elections peacefully.

He encouraged politics based on ideology and not in power struggle or personalised gains, mentioning post-election violence as a painful moment for all Kenyans.
The Governor also made a similar appeal and advised aspirants to prioritise peace over their ambitions. He reminded them that the IDP community is in existence today due to post-election violence of 2007/2008.

The Governor was accompanied by, among others, CEC Members for Health Dr David Njoroge and Education from Samburu County.
